Appalachian State University
There are no official tracks or concentrations in the Organizational and Business Psychology major. Instead, you’ll work with our academic advisors to self-select from a wide range of electives, advanced courses, and lab and capstone experiences that coincide with your interests. Business concentration students are taught by expert faculty in the Department of Psychology as well as the Walker College of Business. Students in the department are involved with research presentation days and competitions through the Council on Undergraduate Research, including the National Conference on Undergraduate Research. A minor is not required but the General Business minor is possible to complete within the Business concentration. You can double major with Business Psychology and another major that doesn’t fall under the Psychology department.
An MA in psychology can indicate a stronger focus on the academic and philosophical nature of business psychology, as well as on the practice of psychological counseling. An MS in psychology might be more targeted toward the science of brain function and research in psychology. This can be a significant difference in some areas of psychology, such as social psych counseling, where licensing is a big issue, and an MA may be preferable. However, in the realm of business psychology, which often doesn’t require state licensure, the MA or MS can be adequate preparation for either further study in a doctoral program or for embarking on a career in the business world. The basic entry requirement for a master’s degree program in business psychology is a bachelor’s degree, and while it can be helpful to have either a bachelor of arts or a bachelor of science in psychology, it isn’t an absolute requirement.
I/O psychology, or business psychology, is the practice of studying the dynamics of the workplace and making recommendations on how to improve the company culture, relationships among employees, and productivity. Not only can you earn a master’s in business with a bachelor’s in psychology, but the two fields overlap quite a bit. A knowledge of math, in particular economics and applied statistics, is also helpful in both fields. While any aspect of the business world would be well-served by your psychology degree, marketing is a particularly good fit.
Students complete 44 credits to receive their MA, including a three-month internship and a thesis, and participate in real-world projects that prepare them to enter the workforce. A minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is required for entry, as well as GRE scores with a Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning score in the 35th percentile and an Analytical Writing score of 3.0 or higher. With a business psychology degree you will be able to supervise business-related research studies, analyze organizational trends and assess the mental health and work performance of employees. You will also be able to explore psychological factors that can affect employees and/or the company, assess a company’s short-term and long-term goals and evaluate the company’s strategies.
The requirements for classifying yourself as a business psychologist vary in different states. It is essential to research the requirements in your state before enrolling in a business psychology training program. Almost all states require you to receive a license or certification before they allow you to practice psychology in any capacity within the state. To become a practicing business psychologist, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, or a doctorate in business psychology or a related field.
